Treatment Options for Severe Emphysema

Depending on the stage of your emphysema and your individual disease profile, your pulmonologist has several options to treat you:
  • Smoking cessation
  • Pharmacological therapy – e.g. bronchodilators, anticholinergics (ACs) or corticosteroids where applicable
  • Oxygen supplementation
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation and/or Exercise Maintenance Programs
  • Lung Volume Reduction Surgery or Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction

When smoking cessation, medications, oxygen therapy, special exercises, and pulmonary rehabilitation no longer provide relief of symptoms caused by emphysema, advanced interventions may provide new options for living with COPD.1

Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR)

Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction interventions may be considered in selected patients with advanced emphysema. Please talk to your medical pulmonologist about the different treatment options to improve your quality of life. One of these options is treatment with endobronchial Coils.  Since 2017, endobronchial Coils (also referred to as “lung coils”) have been included in the GOLD Guidelines, the official guidelines for treating COPD, as a Treatment Option for selected patients with advanced emphysema.
