Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious and potentially life threatening condition.  It occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins in your body, limiting blood flow.  It usually occurs in your leg or pelvis, but it can also occur in your arm or chest.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Redness or skin discoloration
  • Leg pain or tenderness especially when walking or standing
  • Leg fatigue
  • Swelling
  • Sensation of warmth
  • It can also be symptomless

It occurs more frequently in patients who have:

  • Surgery
  • Broken limbs
  • Cancer
  • A history of heart attack, stroke or congestive heart failure
  • Long periods of sitting, such as on long flights or when confined to a bed

DVT can happen at any age but your risk increases after age 60. Early DVT treatment may lower the risk of long term complications.

Care

Therapy with anticoagulation may stop new clots from forming, but anticoagulation alone will not dissolve a clot that has already formed.1

The EkoSonic® Endovascular System changes the standard of care by dissolving clots more completely even behind valves.13 It simultaneously reduces bleeding risks because its Acoustic Pulse Thrombolysis™ treatment greatly reduces the drug dose needed as compared to traditional Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis (CDT).1

There can also be long-term consequences of upper leg DVT.  If the clot isn’t dissolved within a few weeks, it can become a Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis.  The old blood clot interferes with blood flow and can permanently damage the valves in your veins11 creating a condition call Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS).  About 50% of patients with chronic DVT in the upper leg area may develop PTS which can cause disability and negatively impact the quality of life.10,11

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is another, potentially life-threatening complication of DVT, where a clot detaches from the veins in the legs or arms and travels to the lungs. The EkoSonic® Endovascular System is the only endovascular device cleared by the FDA for PE treatment.
